Sixth Street is the historic street and entertainment district in Austin which contributed to the city being named the “live music capital of the world.” Located in the heart of downtown Austin, Sixth Street was formerly designated as Pecan Street. Bars, clubs, music venues, and stores populate East 6th Street between Congress Avenue and Interstate 35. Several venues offer live music throughout the week. Vehicular traffic is usually blocked on East 6th Street and most crossroads from I-35 to Brazos Street on the weekend as well as for holidays and special events. East 6th Street, called Dirty Sixth by locals, hosts a wide variety of events every year, ranging from music and film festivals to biker rallies and the annual Pecan Street Festival.

Here are some venues worth visiting in the Sixth Street neighborhood:

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema – This establishment is now a national chain, but the 6th Street location feels most like the original offering, which is now closed. It is known for its good food, uniques events, and strict rules forbidding talking and texting during movies.

Casino El Camino – This bar and restaurant has a punk rock vibe with its dark decor and rebel spirit. It offers a renowned jukebox and world-class burgers. Be prepared to wait.

Esther’s Follies – This live comedy venue has been a staple in Austin since 1977. Sketch-comedy players touch on everything from life in Austin to national politics.

Midnight Cowboy – This modern speakeasy is housed in a former brothel. It is a cocktail bar with specific rules for entry and reservations are highly recommended.

Parish – The go-to place for live music on this particular stretch of 6th Street. It has a 450 person capacity and a second floor room with views overlooking downtown. Visitors can see both local bands and touring acts almost every night of the week.
